Half the Sky is based on a simple yet profound argument - that the best way to fight poverty and extremism is to educate and empower women and girls.  Written by two of the world's most passionate and honest global reporters, Half the Sky is a call to action and a call to wake up.  Filled with the stories of women who have faced unfathomable atrocities and inequity in their everyday life this book is raw and honest. These atrocities are fuelled not singularly by the opposite sex, but also by the culture, laws and norms that are acceptable in various societies. This book isn't necessarily a call for the West to interfere but instead there are tales of resilience, determination and success in the many stories that Kristof and WuDunn share with the reader.

Upon release, reviews were referring to it as the most important book that they have ever read. I was drawn to the content, and to a review such as this, and was not let down. If you have any interest in gender health and/or in(equity) you will relish this book. At times it is incredibly painful to read, but you finish left with the option to do something about it.

Since its release the book has developed into a movement seeking to "emancipate women and fight global poverty by unlocking women's power as economic catalysts".  And the authors invite all readers to get involved - http://www.halftheskymovement.org/.
