The Burnet Institute
The Burnet Institute is one of Australia's major medical research facilities and is affiliated with Monash University, the University of Melbourne and The Alfred Hospital. The Institute was established with the aim of linking laboratory research and public health, in order to help reduce the global impact of serious infectious diseases (such as HIV, hepatitis, malaria, TB), cancers and inflammatory disease.The Burnet translates medical research into practical, frontline public health programs.The Institute offers a variety of public health training and research programs in collaboration with local, regional and national governments, NGOs and other medical research and public health groups.

The Nossal Institute is the Global Health Institute associated with the University of Melbourne. Through capacity building and fostering partnerships across the Asia-Pacific region, The Nossal Institute is committed to making a difference to global health practice, learning and research in a region of substantial public health need. The Institute offers undergraduate and post-graduate study and research opportunities in the field of global health, and provides ongoing education forums throughout the year for members of the broader community.
James Cook University
James Cook University (JCU) in northern Queensland is becoming renowned for its focus on tropical medicine within public health. The School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences at JCU is comprised of many different departments, including the Anton Breinl Centre for Public Health and Tropical Medicine. There is an extensive range of programs offered, including public health coursework, clinical coursework and research opportunities. There is a lot of flexibility afforded with study, with part-time masters courses via correspondence or block-mode 2 week intensive courses.
Sydney School of Public Health
The University of Sydney School of Public Health boasts the nation's longest running public health program, originally established in 1930 as the Commonwealth School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. As a premier research and educational institution, students benefit from faculty members who are actively involved with global health across the world. There are a range of study options available at the Sydney School of Public Health which include graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, and masters degrees which can be done by either coursework or research. Doctorate level research degrees are also available as are professional development / short courses. These include a Graduate Diploma and Masters of International Public Health (MIPH), as well as dedicated Indigenous Health degrees. Most programs can be done part-time, and many also have distance education options.
Flinders University
The discipline of Public Health at Flinders University remains part of the medical school and the Faculty of Health Sciences. They are committed to promoting local and global action to address social factors which lead to ill health and health inequities. The public health component of the faculty aims to draw the attention of society to social determinants of health that are known to be among the worst causes of poor health and inequalities between and within countries. Such social determinants include unemployment, unsafe workplaces, urban slums, globalization and lack of access to health systems. Flinders University is unique in that it encourages a large focus on understanding social determinants of health. There are many different options for further study within this faculty.
Curtin University Centre for International Health
The Curtin University Centre for International Health (CIH) aspires to advance learning to improve the health and wellbeing of people throughout the world through the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge in health. It offers six post-graduate programs in International Health from graduate certificates to PhD levels, including opportunities to do both coursework and research. CIH aims to develop students’ capacity to address health problems in developing countries as well as in marginalised vulnerable communities in affluent countries. Most courses are run through distance education and the CIH boasts particular expertise in: (1) control of infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS; (2) improvements in maternal and child health; (3) health and wellbeing in post-conflict societies; (4) delivery of primary healthcare to the very poor; (5) Indigenous health; and (6) capacity-building in vulnerable communities in resource-rich countries.
University of Otago
The University of Otago run a Masters of Public Health (MPH) program that is based around a thesis and dissertations. It is taught in small classes, with an emphasis on multi-disciplinary approaches. Students are drawn from a wide range of backgrounds in the health, social and allied sciences, and many enrol on a part-time basis. Graduates from the programme are equipped to work in a range of non-clinical fields in the health sector, principally in planning and management and in the delivery of public health programmes.
Melbourne School of Population Health
The Melbourne School of Population Health is part of the The University of Melbourne's Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The School aims to strengthen the understanding, capacity and services of society to meet the health needs of the entire population and to improve the quality and equity of health care.The coursework and research opportunities offered for undergraduate and graduate studies are designed to encourage students to appreciate the broader context of health and healthcare provision.
Menzies School of Health Research
The Menzies School of Health Research is one of Australia's leading Indigenous and tropical health research facilities. Through scientific and public health research, Menzies aims to discover better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, tackle the social determinants of health and deliver improved health services. The Menzies School was established to help break the cycle of ill-health facing many Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. The Centre offers a range of research and training opportunities, including formal graduate courses in public and tropical health.
LaTrobe University Centre for Dialogue
The Centre for Dialogue is an initiative of LaTrobe University and specialises in the theory and practice of dialogue across all cultural, religious, political and economic dimensions and aims to identify avenues and mechanisms to promote dialogue nationally and internationally. The Centre was established in the hope that by broadening and deepening the understanding of dialogue amongst the community, it can be used to address many of the problems in society that remain unresolved. The Centre offers a range of public forums and seminars and graduate courses focussing on the power and potential of dialogue in resolving conflict.
