Medecins sans Frontieres
Medecins sans Frontieres is one of the world's leading independent humanitarian organisations for delivering medical humanitarian aid and assistance to people caught in crises around the world. Medecins sans Frontieres base their work on the humanitarian principles of medical ethics and impartiality, thus their internventions are based on needs alone not on political, economic, religious or social agendas. In 1999, Medecins Sans Frontieres was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Opportunities are available for doctors, nurses, administrators, epidemiologists, laboratory technicians, mental health professionals logistics and water & sanitation experts. Medecins sans Frontieres deploys around 120 volunteers from Australia each year. Contact the Australian office for recruitment information.
Red Cross & Red Crescent
The Australian Red Cross is a leading humanitarian organisation in Australia, aiming to improve the lives of vulnerable people through services delivered and the promotion of humanitarian laws and values. All Red Cross activities run by volunteers and staff are guided by the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement - humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
The Australian Red Cross is active in every State and Territory in Australia, and provides over 60 community services, ranging from blood supplies and disaster services to first aid and refugee services. Internationally, Red Cross is involved in numerous development and emergency programs and recruit doctors, nurses, administrators and allied health professionals for the field.
Australian Volunteers International (AVI)
Australian Volunteers International (AVI) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that manages development programs and projects in a number of different countries around the world. Their work focuses primarily on reducing poverty, providing health & education services, promoting human rights & gender equality, and protecting the environment. AVI projects empower local people to develop their own communities, access resources and achieve their full potential by working in partnership with local organisations to respond to local needs, thereby building capacity of both organisations and people.
Opportunities exist for nursing, health promotion and other allied health professionals for projects of 1-2 years predominantly in the Asia-Pacific region.
Fred Hollows Foundation
Fred Hollows Foundation is an international development organisation, focussing on blindness prevention and Australian Indigenous health. It is carry on the work of the late Professor Fred Hollows (1929-1993). Fred was an Australian eye doctor, a skilled surgeon of international renown, a champion of the right of all people to good health and a strong advocate for social justice.
Australian Sri Lankan Medical Aid Team
Australian Sri Lankan Medical Aid Team is a partnership between Australian health workers and their counterparts in Sri Lanka. Through frequent visits the teams provide medical equipment and supplies, help local doctors and nurses improve their skills and knowledge, conduct medical clinics in outlying and poverty-stricken areas, and upgrade operating theatres.
Interplast
Interplast provides surgical and allied health services in developing countries in the Asia Pacific region. The focus is on plastic surgery, treating people with conditions such as cleft lip and palate, or burn scar contractures. Treatment is targeted to the indigent population who would otherwise not be able to afford to access services. All Interplast programs are training programs.
Kind Cuts for Kids
Kind Cuts for Kids is an Australian paediatric surgical organisation that works in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Specialist teams of doctors, nurses, technicians and allied health staff conduct short missions involving clinical work and teaching of the local staff.
Oxfam
Oxfam is an international development organisation involved in a huge variety of projects including community health and development, advocacy and education.
Center for Disease Control (CDC)
Center for Disease Control (CDC) - This US agency gives advice to WHO and other international organisations on specific health issues globally. Currently (for example) it has an excellent resource base on Avian Influenza H5NI (Bird Flu).
Emergency Nutrition Network (ENN)
Emergency Nutrition Network (ENN) aims to improve the effectiveness of emergency food and nutrition interventions, by encouraging greater dialogue and institutional memory between field workers, researchers and academics.
