According to the World Health Organisation, tobacco is the number one cause of premature death worldwide, with increases projected to 8 million deaths per year worldwide by 2030. This burden is not to be equally shared, however, with up to 80% of those people in low and middle income countries. In “The Battle for Heart and Lungs”, a BBC radio documentary aired in 2011, journalist Sue Armstrong explores the effects of the tobacco industry on developing countries, with a focus on Malawi.
