The Story so Far
Global Health interest and involvement has been growing rapidly among Australian health workers and students. Australian institutions such as the Burnet Institute and Nossal Institute are leading the way with both teaching and practice, while university consortiums are rolling out more and better courses in Global Health every year.
But the greatest growth in passion and enthusiasm has undoubtably been from the ranks of students and junior health workers. Medical, nursing and allied health students now have Global Health included in their curricula, and have the opportunity to take part in Global Health interest groups and a dedicated national conference (AMSA's Global Health Conference). But what happens when these passionate young graduates leave uni and get immersed in work? How can these health workers keep their interest in Global Health alive in the midst of other demands?
In mid-2009 a group of young Australian health workers facing these questions met up to discuss how they could stay involved in Global Health. They soon realised that:
-
The passion for Global health among Australian health workers is huge.
-
The opportunities for involvement in Global Health is enormous.
-
The challenge is giving busy Australian health workers an avenue to take advantage of these opportunities at every stage of their career.
After consultation with experienced Global Health workers a partnership was formed with the Burnet Institute Centre for International Health to create the Global Health Gateway.
